David NelsonDavid Nelson

Class of 2000

A 2000 graduate of Comstock, David Nelson, a born leader, a tremendous athlete, and a consummate teammate, earned 9 Varsity Letters, and was a team captain in three sports.  His leadership and athletic ability helped lead his Football, Basketball and Baseball teams to District Championships.  During his four years in baseball, Comstock went 79-24 overall and 38-4 in the Wolverine Conference, leading the team to three straight Conference Championships.  He set career and individual records as a pitcher for Most Wins in Season, as a hitter for Most Homeruns in a Season and in a Career. David also holds the record for Most Runs Scored in a season and is ensconced in the top ten of 19 other records.   A three-time defensive player of the year, David helped lead Comstock’s 1999 Football team to Comstock Football’s first State Playoff Appearance and an Elite Eight finish.  David was respected by his teammates, coaches and the teachers and staff of not just Comstock, but by his opponents and coaches from other schools.

Offered a chance to play Division I Baseball, David chose to go to Carthage College where he excelled both in Baseball and in the classroom.  He was chosen as a Second Team All-American in his senior year. During his off-seasons, David returned to Comstock where he volunteered as an assistant baseball coach.

Moving to Fort Myers, David began his elementary teaching and high school coaching career in Lehigh Acres, FL, later moving to the highly rated Bishop Verot Catholic High School in Fort Myers, where Division I baseball recruits are the rule rather than the exception, first as an assistant Varsity Coach, and later as the Head Coach.  During David’s four years as a Varsity Coach, he led Bishop Verot to three state final appearances, and one final four in the 4A High School Division and in 2015 was named Florida’s State Coach of the Year.

David is currently an Assistant-Principal at Bishop Verot, where remains very active in his school’s athletics as well as in his community.  David was a credit to Comstock when he was a student-athletes here, he reflected well on Comstock as a college student, and he continues to be an outstanding example of the best of Comstock student- athlete graduates. - Rich Bailey
