Amy Eckles, a graduate of Mattawan High School and Western Michigan University, is a new special education teacher at Comstock Elementary.

At Western, she received a bachelor’s degree in special education: cognitive impairments. She has also earned a master’s degree in teaching from Western. “I chose this field because I had a wonderful experience working with students with special needs,” she said of her career choice.

That wonderful experience occurred in high school. “I worked with students with special needs during their meal manners class and it was a favorite part of my day,” she said. Her third grade teacher, Mrs. Towers, was especially influential in her life. “She worked with me during school and tutored me after school to ensure my success,” she said.

She started her career in Benton Harbor working with students in kindergarten through seventh grade. After that, she taught in grades kindergarten through second for seven years in the Lakeview School District in Battle Creek.

Spending time with her husband and their two dogs is what she enjoys in her free time.
