10 - 8 MHSSA Districts - Comstock 0 - South Haven 6

We played a great game tonight against a strong opponent. The other team came out thinking that this would be an easy win for them, but we made them earn their victory every step of the way. We started the game a little rocky and nervous, but quickly got into our rhythm. In the first half, we gave them a challenge with lots of combination passes and runs that led to a few great scoring opportunities. Every time the opponent scored a goal, we reset and focused on the game ahead of us and didn't let our mistakes persist.
We kept them to two goals in the second half by playing a more aggressive game, both physically and strategically. We held our defensive line higher to help shut down their through and long balls, resulting in 8 offside calls in our favor. This saved some energy for our defense since we no longer had to chase down their attackers, which let us control the midfield and created more opportunities for us up top. Ultimately, we weren't able to deliver the goals we needed, but we made this game competitive the whole way through.

10-6 - Comstock 9 - Covert 1

Tonight was a great celebration of our seniors and all the progress they have made over the season and their careers. Within the first 10 minutes we were up 4-0 and intentionally slowed down the game so we could get some younger players in and see what next season will look like. We practiced simple soccer and made sure to take care of ourselves to avoid any injuries before our upcoming district game. We ended the first half up 8-1 thanks to a hat trick from Gui Rosa and a varsity first for Charlie Baker
During the second half, we had one objective: get a goal for our one remaining senior who didn't have a goal on his career stat sheet yet. Our defense stayed strong and our offense worked the ball and waited for the best opportunities to send through balls or crosses. With about 20 minutes left, a cross came in from the left side and defender Brody Woolsey put it into the back of the net, wrapping up the game and the regular season. I'm really proud of the team for playing selflessly and working together to make this happen. It was a great game and closed out the season in a really positive way.

10-2 - Comstock 10 - Quincy 2

This game was a great way to end a long week and get ready for hard district games next week. After the first 3 goals, we were able to stick to simple soccer with smart passes and waiting for our opportunity to score. This meant we had a much needed easy game. We were able to let some of our full time players rest and recover and get some good playing time for those who haven't seen as much this season. We were up 4-0 at the end of the first half and everyone, whether starter or second string, was playing their best game.
On the second half, we prioritized getting the ball to our seniors and putting the underclassman in the positions they'll need to be ready for next year. We had two career firsts during this game. First up was Teegan Hagenbuch about 5 minutes in with the first goal of his career. After that, we moved Landon Hofacre up to forward and he got his first career goal with about 20 minutes to go.
I was really proud to see how the team worked to produce opportunities for these two to score tonight and that they did so while maintaining their positions and making the same passes they would have made no matter who was up top. It just goes to show how versatile our team is and that they are really there for each other.

10-1 - Comstock 4 - Bronson 1

Tonight was one of the best games we've played all season. Everything connected for us because we came out hard. I always tell the guys they play their best when they're having fun and tonight was a perfect example of that. We didn't get much warm up time before kick off but that wasn't a problem when we stepped on to the field with a winning mentality. Muuji Enkhee scored a beautiful goal for us that no one was really sure went in until the center conferred with the AR. I think we just got confused and distracted by that situation because they evened up the score almost immediately. But that didn't stop us one bit.
We came out of half time the same way we started and we could not have played better. We hammered their goalie with shots from every spot on the field. Thankfully for the other team, he had a dozen incredible saves otherwise this game would have been over way sooner. Muuji got another goal followed by an upper 90 goal by Isaiah Andrews from 30 yards out. Gui Rosa took a dozen shots that were all great but just wouldn't go in until there were 3 minutes left on the clock and he was just about to be subbed out. All these attacking opportunities would not have been possible without our flawless defense that maintained a high press on their team and kept playing in their half of the field.

9-30 - Comstock 1 - Cassopolis 2

This was a tough loss for us after we beat this team 3-2 in the first half of the season. We had a great start to the match and dominated most of the play. We took way more shots and created scoring opportunities for the first 15 minutes. Unfortunately, none of our shots went in and the one they took did. For the rest of the half we were a totally different team. We weren't fighting for the ball, making attacking runs, or anticipating the ball. We got in other's way, which led to an own goal. These 25 minutes or so made all the difference and put us seriously behind.
We reset for the second half pretty well and looked more like we did when we started the match. We took more shots than them and protected against give and gos on defense, but they also came out with their best play in the second half. Teegan Hagenbuch gets a special shout out for anticipating their passes and stealing the ball repeatedly to the point where they stopped playing to his side. We got a goal from Gui Rosa which kept us in the game and gave us something to keep fighting for. Even down to the last 30 seconds it was anybody's game. Even though we lost, I'm proud of this team for rebounding from a bad first half and fighting all the way through to the final whistle.

9-24 - Comstock 1 - Hartford 9
We put up a good fight against an excellent team. We knew going in that this game would be difficult, but we didn't let that stop us from taking offensive opportunities every chance we got. Our offensive combination of Salter, Ramos, and Friar had 4 or 5 good combinations to switches across the field to shots. Ultimately, it was Ollie Childs with a goal just past the right post that bought us some more time.
Defensively, we kept up with them the best we could. We've been practicing anticipating the ball and picking off easy passes, which we were able to do successfully several times and allowed us to more aggressively shut down their attacks. Despite our best effort, we still had 3 guys out for injury or illness and more on the field not play at 100%. This was the best performance I could have asked for under the circumstances.

9-22 - Comstock 2 - Bangor 2

We dominated the first 25 minutes of the game. We had 5 corner kick opportunities and took 10 shots that all fell just short. Despite possessing the ball 80% of the time, they got a breakaway and scored the first goal of the match. We kept it together after that, but just enough to keep them from scoring again. We struggled to shut down their through balls and our offense lacked the intensity we started the game with.
We started the second half with the same intensity as the first, but they finally woke up and it was an even fight the whole way. We struggled to get opportunities inside the box, and finally found success in a shot from Isaiah Andrews from 30 yards out that landed in the upper right corner.  The quickly took the lead again with a lucky ball that slipped through our hands. Instead of getting down and giving up, we have it all we had to earn the game equalizer from Michael Friar with less than 5 minutes to go.
We lost to this team 1-5 at the beginning of the season and I couldn't have asked for a better performance to show how much we've progressed this year. We could have easily been defeated if we had given any less effort, but we stayed mentally strong and played the game we play best, in spite of any mistakes that tripped us up along the way.

9-18 - Comstock 4 - Leslie 1

This game was a perfect example of how well we can play when we play our best. Even with a number of players out due to injuries, we controlled this game by making simple, smart passes and hammering their goalie with shots. Once one of those shots finally landed in the back of he net, the rest of the goals kept coming.

In the second half, we focused on pressing high to keep play in their half of the field and to overwhelm their defense. Even when they bunched up on our attackers, we maintained our shape and waited for the best moment to attack. Gui Rosa and Muji Enkhee both had two beautiful goals tonight.

9-17 - Comstock 0 - Bloomingdale 8

We didn't have the best start to the game. Bloomingdale dominated the majority of play for the first 20 minutes, but we were able to hold them off and keep them from scoring while we got our feet under us. Once we settled down, the game was much more competitive. They were still out playing us, but we were posing a real offensive threat for them. Landon Hofacre had a 4 or 5 game changing saves which kept us in the game during this half.

We started the second half down 0-1, but came out like we wanted to win. We forced them to play aggressively which tired them out and made them start losing their combination plays and they resorted to long balls. Isaiah Andrews was rock solid in the second half and had 4 beautiful shots in goal that sadly didn't go in. Unfortunately the energy in the second half dwindled for us and the aggressive game took out all our subs due to injury and we couldn't keep up with them after that.

9-15 - Comstock 0 - Berrien Springs 5

We had a great competition for the first half of this game. We shut down their best attackers and plays and managed to create a few good opportunities of our own. Even when we got down by 1 goal, we continued to keep pressuring their defense.

After the half, we increased the intensity and were pressing high on the offensive line for 20 minutes. We dominated the game this way, but unfortunately, we didn't get off enough shots for it to make the difference and we ultimately tired ourselves out. The last 15 minutes of the game our performance slipped a lot because we were exhausted and we just couldn't shut down their attacks.

9-11 - Comstock 4 - Bronson 2

We dominated the field of play for most of the first half by playing close, simple soccer an looking to switch the field to our weak side. They struggled to defend us and we always had 1 or 2 open players on the attack. We had a dozen shots that went just wide or right to the keeper, but what made the difference is that we were taking shots.

They certainly played with more heart and intensity in the first half, and it was 3-1 at halftime. We matched that energy in the second half and fought hard to stay on top, finishing it out with a final goal from Michael Friar, his second of the match, to give us a little breathing room until the clock ticked down.

9-10 - Comstock 3 - Cassopolis 2

This was a very evenly matched game with no score 20 minutes in to the first half. We were definitely putting pressure on their defense and taking every opportunity we could. Finally, we got ahead with a goal from Gi Rosa from inside the 6 and we entered halftime up 1-0. We didn't play our best game in the second half and they came out incredibly strong, fighting for the win.

We managed to get up 2-0 with a great shot from our wide by Knox Salter. After that I think we got over confident and a little sloppy because they scored 2 goals in quick succession that kept them in the competition. One more goal from Gi Rosa put us back on top and we fought hard to hang on to that lead until the clock ran out despite the other team giving us everything they had.

9-8 - Comstock 0 - Hartford 8

We started the game out strong and play was pretty balanced with both teams putting together strong attacking combinations and challenging the other side's defensive line. About 10 minutes in, they got their first goal, but we responded with a few runs and shots from Knox Salter that fell short.

The rest of the game, our play was pretty mixed. We'd have 5 really strong minutes followed by 5 really weak minutes. If we had played the whole match like we did when we were playing our best, the score would have been much closer. We're getting closer every game to playing through at our highest level, even against strong competition and we look forward to playing Hartford again later this year.

9-6 - Bloomingdale Tournament - Comstock 3 - Parchment 3

This was a much different game than the last time we met Parchment and they were not ready for us. They had a break between their first game and when we played them, and we were coming right out of a close-loss match. The lack of break for us proved to be to our advantage as we quickly got up 1-0 with a goal from Knox Salter.

We were pretty much goal for goal and play for play the whole game. We weren't able to stop their lead attacker all the time, but we definitely found his weaknesses and prevented him from creating too many problems for us. They ultimately got a late goal to even things up, but we kept on the gas until the very end.

9-6 - Bloomingdale Tournament - Comstock 3 - Pennfield 5

We got out to a great start this match and maintained that pace for most of the game. We were down 2-3 at halftime and cam back with a strong desire to get ahead. Landon Hofacre had a stand out game with 2 impossible saves that kept us in the competition.

We got down to 2-5 and our spirit and play really started dragging, but we had a late goal from Guillherme Rosa which boosted our energy and physicality. If we have played the whole game with the same intensity of the last 5 minutes, no doubt we would have won.

9-3 - Comstock 1 - Bangor 5

We started this game strong with heavy attacking pressure in the first 15 minutes and got out ahead with the first goal. As the weather started to turn, we slipped up a little bit and they evened up the score. It was pretty even from there on and we only had a few minutes left until halftime when we called the game. We will reschedule this game and if we play how we played tonight, it's our game to lose.

Reschedule

We didn't come out nearly as strong in the continuation of this postponed game as we did in the first half a few days ago. The other team knew that we could give them a run for their money and didn't wait for us to get it together. We struggled to communicate well and to play the ball to feet. Even so, we still had a few really nice shots on goal that just fell short.

8-27 - Comstock 1 - Bloomingdale 9

We had a really strong first half against this team featuring solid defending and domination of the game in the attacking third. Unfortunately we just didn't take enough shots and had a few huge defensive errors and ended up going into halftime down 0-3.

We continued to play aggressively and find opportunities to push the ball to the attack, but we definitely got tired into the second and they simply outpaced us. This was a very different game than the times we've played Bloomingdale in the past and I think we'll give them a run for their money the next time we meet.

8-25 - Comstock 4 - Quincy 0

We started the first half a little hesitant and had some communication issues that gave us a slow start, but by halftime we were up 1-0 and keeping the ball in our attacking third. It took a while to settle into a rhythm and get familiar with the two new additions to our team.

We started strong in the second half and picked up right where we left off the first half. We moved the ball confidently, played to feet, and made runs to support play progression. It's really exciting that we had 4 goals all scored by different players. This tells me that we have deep offensive talents and can find scoring opportunities everywhere on the field.

8-20 - Comstock 0 - Parchment 8

We had another game with a rocky start that was hard to recover from. We hit our stride after the first 10 minutes and found opportunities to advance the ball up the field. When we were in their attacking third, we controlled most of the game, but we were too hesitant to shoot.

When the ball was in our defensive third, we struggled to stay with their two biggest offensive threats. Eventually we figured out how to defend against them and that slowed the game down, but we couldn't come back from the rough start.

8-15 - Comstock 1 - Lawton 9

We had a slow start to this match with a few simple mistakes that the opponent was able to capitalize on which set is back for the rest of the game. Toward the end of the second half, we started to turn it around with some good offensive combinations and a great goal from Knox Salter.

We had a much better second half where we continued to see smooth transitions, playing to feet, and communication. We had a really unfortunate own goal to close us out. This would have been a very different game if we had been able to field a full 11 and there was a lot of good to take away from tonight.
