10-11 - Comstock 2nd Place in Comstock Tournament

On Saturday 11th October, we had the privilege of hosting the end of season tournament at Comstock Middle School.  Due to the fact that one school withdrew from the tournament, we ended up having more group games to play as we competed against the teams in our group twice.

Game 1 - vs White Pigeon  - We started off strong in this match and both served and defended well. We ended up winning the first game by a score of 25 - 11 and were maybe a bit over confident going into the second game. The second game was much closer all the way before White Pigeon broke away to win the game 25 - 19. So with one win each, we still managed to edge in front as we scored more points in both games.

Game 2 vs Bangor - This game started off really well for us again, with our players working together with their team to set one another up. We won the first game 25-12 but knew Bangor would fight back in the second game. The second game was much closer and went point for point most of the way until we managed to get in front and win the game 25-22 and the match 2-0.

Game 3 vs WP - In another close match with White Pigeon, we once again got off to a good start and managed to with the first game 25 - 22. We knew it would be another close match but we also knew we just needed to score a lot of points in order to go through to the finals. So we were competitive for the majority of the game, narrowly losing the second game 23-25 but again, we held a point differential above other teams in our group.

Game 4 vs Bangor - Having just played and needing to play again to determine each teams rank, we started off a little slow against Bangor in our final group game. We didn’t serve as well as we normally do and we had some miscommunication amongst our players as we lost the first game 24-25 but went on to recover and win the next game 25-21. This once again meant we had a great points advantage over both other teams and ensured us to finish as the number 1 seed from our group.

Semi Final vs Decatur  - Our Semi Final match vs Decatur started out really strong as our girls managed to jump out to a big lead before Dacutur went on a run of their own. From there it was point for point but Comstock ended winning by a score of  25-22. The second game was much closer and we had our chances to finish off the match but Decatur dug deep and won the second game 25-23 meaning we had a play-off game to come. In the third and final game, the Comstock girls worked really hard to set one another up and win the game 15-10 and the whole match 2-1.

Final vs Cassopolis - We worked really hard to get to the final and in the beginning, it looked like Cassopolis would win quite comfortably after taking out the first game 25-17. However, we have fought back a number of times throughout the season and in the second game we really worked well as a team to set each other up, call for the ball and stick to the team plans. We won the second game 25-22 sending the final into a 3rd and final game. As to be expected, the final game of the tournament was a close one the whole way. We broke out to a small lead before Cassapolis fought back however we still had our chance to win but unfortunately fell short, with Cassopolis winning the 3rd and deciding game by a score of 25-23 and an over win of 2-1.

Congratulations to our 7th Grade Girls for their fantastic season finishing off with a Runners-Up trophy, our first for a little while but with this group, it won’t be their last! Well done!

10-8 - Comstock 2 - White Pigeon 1

In our previous match against White Pigeon we had some really close games and tonight started out just the same. The first game went point for point until we were able to finally break free, serve strong, set up teammates and win the first game 25-18. The second game was even closer and went point for point the whole game. We had an opportunity to serve and tie the scores but White Pigeon fought hard to take that point and game from us, narrowly winning 25-23 leaving the match at 1-1 going into the deciding game. In the final game, our girls remained calm and started setting each other up to spike the ball and win points. We also went on a strong run of serving and eventually won that final game 25-17 giving us an overall win by a score of 2-1.

10-6 - Comstock 2 - Hartford 1

We began our final week of volleyball with a really strong performance against Hartford. The first game was really close the whole way and our team was even down 24-22 at one stage with Harford having a few game points themselves however, we fought hard to come back from being down and won the first game 26-24. In the second game, we got off to a great start with strong serving before Harford came back a bit. Our girls demonstrated their resiliency to maintain a small lead throughout the second game and come away with a win 25-21. In our third and final game we decided to share some court time around and we weren’t as focused as the first two games. Hartford won the third game 25-14 but Comstock enjoyed the overall win: 2-1.

10-1 - Comstock 0 - Marcellus 3

Another home match for our girls meaning we had a lot of supporters and energy in the gymnasium. The start of this match went point for point until one strong Marcellus server was able to win multiple points in a row and this proved to be the difference in a tight first game which we lost by a score of 25-22. In our second game we started quite well but once again failed to stop two strong servers from Marcellus who got their full 8 serves each, winning 16 points in a row. So we were really competitive for the rest of the challenge, just found it hard to return the strong/fast serves. We eventually lost the second game 25-16. In the third and final game we started much stronger and had a 10 point lead at one stage which is when the strong servers from Marcellus had a chance to serve again, getting them the game win 25-22 and a total score of 3-0.

9-29 - Comstock 2 - Lawrence 1

This match was played against a combined 7th/8th Grade team from Lawrence and while we started a little slow, the girls found their energy to claim the win tonight. We fell behind to begin the first game and just couldn’t quite catch up with Lawrence and lost the first game 25-17. Following that, our girls served well, moved, passed to each other and enjoyed a comfortable 25-12 win in the second game. For the final and deciding game, we got off to a great start breaking their serve and then serving well ourselves to take a strong lead. We won the 3rd game by a score of 25-15 and the overall match by 2 - 1.

9-24 - Comstock 1 - Centreville 2

For our final away match, we travelled to Centerville along with the football and cheer teams. It was a difficult opening game with Centreville serving strongly to take an early lead however we fought back and drew level midway through the game. Unfortunately their strongest server finished with 8 points in a row to secure the first game 25-17. The second game went much like the first, we were competitive against some standard serving but couldn’t stop one server from scoring 8 in a row, two times! We eventually lost this game 25-15. In our final game we sent in our strongest team to try and get a win and we were successful in doing so, winning the final game by 25-15 with some strong serving of our own. Overall, Centreville won the match 2-1.

9-22 - Comstock 2 - Bloomingdale 1

In our first home match the girls really bought some energy and got off to a great start. Bloomingdale started making a comeback in the first game but we held out to win the first game 25-22. In the second game we substituted a new group of six into the match and they too brought energy and enthusiasm to get off to a great start and hold their lead throughout the game. We won that second game comfortably by a score of 25-12 meaning we were the overall winners of the match. In the third and final game, we shared the court time around and got some less experienced players some more court time. We still came really close to winning that final game but eventually lost 25-18. The final scores however were Comstock 2 - Bloomingdale 1.

9-17 - Comstock 2 - White Pigeon 1

We started our first game by serving and managed to take a big lead with some excellent serving and defense. Our team worked well together, setting the ball up for one another and we also got the result we wanted by winning the first game 25-14. In the second game White Pigeon fought back but it was close for the majority of the game until they went on a run of points with their best servers. We ended up losing the second game by 13-25 but we still had the final 3rd game to play. After winning the toss, we took control of the game with some really good team work. The game was close the whole way with no more than a 4 point lead to either team. In the end we persevered and got the victory winning the final game 25-22 and the whole match 2-1. Well done girls, looking forward to our first home game.

9-10 - Comstock 2 - Bangor 1

Our second match started with much more energy than the previous game and we were able to get 1st serves in and defend well jumping out to a 8-0 lead. Our team finished the first game strong to win 25-15. With 13 players on our roster we started the second game with a fresh set of 6 players who again served well, set up teammates and were able to come away with the win by a score of 25-18. In our third and final game, we experimented with our line up but still played well only just losing in the end by a score of 25-19 leaving Comstock with an overall winning score of 2 - 1.

9-9 - Comstock 0 - Bloomingdale 3

In our first league game for the year we travelled away to Bloomingdale full of confidence following our weekend tournament. All three games were extremely close but we just lost out overall. Bloomingdale won the first game 25-22 with the lead changing multiple times throughout the game. The second game was even closer and there was no more than a point difference the whole time. Bloomingdale ended up winning that game with a score of 28-26 even though we had game point ourselves a couple of times.

9-6 - Martin Tournament

Our season began with a tournament where games are played to 21 points with a quick turn around before the next game begins. Our first game was against Galesbug-Augusta and we got off to a great start with a 21-18 win. The second game was close the whole way but unfortunately we just lost that game 21-19. However, this meant we came out with a 1 point advantage from that game.

Our second game of the tournament was against Gobles who we found to be a much tougher opponent, getting a lot of their serves in play. We lost the first game 21-17 before fighting back in the second game, winning in another close game by 21-19. Our third and final group game saw us match up with the hosts, Martin. Whilst the first game was close, we demonstrated a lot of control and won the first game 21-20. The second game in this match blew out a bit in our favor with some excellent serving from the Comstock girls, winning the second game by 21-10.

Following the group games, we were ranked third overall and went into our first final against Galesburg-Augusta (again). We won the first game 21-18 but lost the second game 21-19. This meant we had to play a third game to 15 and our girls were victorious, winning the final game 15-12. This sent us through to the semi-final with a chance to make the final. Our semi final game was a difficult challenge against the Kalamazoo Cougars who had some really strong servers. We lost the semi final game 21-12 & 21-10 meaning we finished in the top four for the tournament. It was a great effort from our girls and I’m sure we’ll be able to demonstrate improvement as the season progresses.
