Michael Giddings

Michael GiddingsMichael Giddings

Class of 1999

During Mike’s four years here as a tri-athlete, he was the consummate leader, someone who excelled in everything he did, in the classroom and on the field, with the ability and willingness to help make his classmates and team mates better.  A tireless worker, his attention to detail and his striving to do things the right way were hallmarks not just of his play, but of an approach he helped instill in his teammates.  He encouraged his teammates when they did things right and worked with them to get better when they didn't.  The first to admit his own mistakes, he constantly worked to improve his own performances.  In his one year of football, he became a field leader and impact player for Comstock, leading to an All-Conference selection.  In basketball, hurling his body onto the floor or into the stands in pursuit of a loose ball and setting up plays for others to shine were hallmarks of his play. In baseball, his desire for excellence helped propel the 1999 Varsity Baseball team to arguably one of its' greatest years on record, a 13-1 Conference Championship and a 30 - 7 overall record.  In the Conference Championship game that year, Mike led the team in an exciting come from behind win. Working his way to third base, and with a two out, two strike count on the batter, Mike stole home to seal the game.  It was a huge win for the team, but just one more performance in a career that typified the kind of play and attitude Mike brought to the field every day.  Mike’s name appears in the top ten of 25 different individual and career records for Comstock Baseball and his single season and career records for a catcher throwing out runners still set the mark for all catchers following in his footsteps.  A catcher at nationally ranked Marietta College for a year and for three years at Carthage College, Mike helped led the Carthage Red Men to three NCAA Regional appearances and one College World Series appearance.  He was a Team Captain in his Junior and Senior years and ended his college career with a .350 Career Batting Average. - Coach Rich Bailey
