STEM Academy Selected as School of the Year
Posted on 01/26/2017
STEM Academy is school of the year!Comstock STEM Academy was selected as the School of the Year as a part of the Catalyst University Education Awards. STEM Academy was presented with the honor at the day-long leadership conference held at Wings Event Center on January 26, 2017. As the School of the Year recipient, Comstock STEM Academy will receive $5,000, which STEM Academy director Chris Chopp says will be used to expand and enhance hands-on “STEM” opportunities across all grade levels at the K-8 school.

Comstock Public Schools is thrilled to receive this honor, and recognizes that it would not be possible without the support of the community, the guidance of the Comstock Board of Education, input from the STEM Academy Advisory Board, and the tireless work from the district’s Director of Curriculum, Jill Ansel. Comstock STEM Academy’s first director, Gerielle Stewart, and current director, Chris Chopp, have played valuable roles in the school’s success, as have all of the teachers who share their enthusiasm and knowledge on a daily basis.

The Comstock STEM Academy is a 238 student, K-8 public school that is a part of Comstock Public Schools. The STEM academy is in its fourth year overall, and its second year as a K-8 school. The creation of a STEM school in Comstock was born out of the idea that parents were looking for choices for their children, that students could benefit from a hands-on approach to learning, and that people with more knowledge in the STEM disciplines would be essential to our nation’s workforce. The school’s success is illustrated by the Catalyst University Education Award, and by its strong showing as Kalamazoo county’s #1 performing school on the statewide M-STEP test in 2015.

All of the recipients are featured in an article in (269) magazine.
