JV Boys Basketball

2-18 - Comstock 31 - Plainwell 55

Last night Tuesday, February 18th the Comstock Boy's Basketball JV Team welcomed the Plainwell Trojans to their gymnasium. Although school was canceled, it appeared that class would still be in season. After a slow start the Colts would find a way to grab a 12-11 first quarter lead. From there the lead would only grow going into halftime as the boys lead 30-17. The Colts would never look back and would grow their halftime lead into a 24 point win with a final score of 55-31.

Everybody has really stepped it up defensively lately. So much so that its very difficult right now to give any one or two people credit without feeling as if I am leaving someone out. So the effort that Michael Small, Fabian Gonzalez, Dakota Black, and Ryan Eames have been able to put in boxing out and securing rebounds has been a huge difference maker. When we combine that with the ball pressure and steals we are getting from Cal Ormanovich, Chad Dingman, Sage Stephenson, and Gavin Clopton, it has been a huge difference maker in these games and we find ourselves going on multiple 6-0 and 8-0 runs at times because of it.

With that being said, last night I seen a kid probably play his best game of the year in Darrien Richards. The boy played incredible on defense. So incredible that I found myself talking about it on the sidelines to the other guys and using his efforts as examples in the huddle during timeouts and in between quarters. In the different zones we ran he didn't just guard space, instead came over playing great help defense and forced quite a few turnovers both directly and indirectly. Richards was a big part of the lead increasing from 1 to 13 in the second quarter.

Offensively the Colts were once again lead by Chad Dingman who still managed to put up 18pts even though he didn't step foot on the floor in the fourth quarter. Gavin Clopton scored all of his 12 pts in the first half and floor generaled the game very efficiently from the point guard position. Cal Ormanovich and DeShawn McPherson both scored 7 to round the game out offensively.

2-13 - Comstock 53 - Allegan 14

Thursday February 13th the JV Boys Basketball Team hosted the Allegan Tigers. When these two teams played back in early January it would be a closely decided contest that would see Comstock prevail 30-28, however, this game would be much different. After a slow start the Colts quickly opened a 14-2 lead and coasted from there to a 53-14 win. It was a great defensive effort from top to bottom. The majority of the points scored came off turnovers forced on the defensive end that would lead to quick scoring opportunities. The Colts were lead by Chad Dingman who still managed to score 19 points even though he sat the majority of the second half. Everyone on the team really stepped up defensively some Dakato Black, Darrien Richards, Cal Ormanovich, and Fabian Gonzalez seemed to force a bad pass, steal, or create a jump ball on what appeared to be every other possession. Even when the Colts weren't able to force a possession after a bad shot Ryan "Mean" Eames would end up with the defensive rebound recording double digit rebounds in the first half alone.

2-11 - Comstock 44 - Berrien Springs 37

Last night your Comstock Colt JV Boys Basketball team welcomed the Berrien Springs Shamrocks into town. Colts came out taking an early 15-6 first quarter lead thanks to a true thoroughbred performance by Mike Smalls recording multiple steals, rebounds, boxing out, and scoring 7 of his team high 12 pts in the first quarter. There were some minor stumbling blocks in both the 2nd and 3rd quarters as we saw the Colts lead shrink through out parts of both quarters. Fortunately Fabian Gonzalez was able to pull through what looked to be a pretty bad injury and help his team fight through slump. Showcasing now stop hustling, working every possession despite only being at 75-80%. Chad Dingman scored 7 of his nine fourth quarter points to help your JV team close the game out and go on to a 44-37 win over the Shamrocks. Reflecting back on the year to where we are now, it's great to see a kid like Mike Small show what a WORK-HORSE he can be going from someone coming off the bench with a very minor role, to a clear cut starter putting up a double double in a winning effort.

1-21 - Comstock 36 - Edwardsburg 51

On Tuesday January 21st the JV Boys hosted the Edwardsburg Eddies. It would turn out to be a very difficult game for the Colts who trailed from tip to horn. Cal Ormanovich stepped up, extending his normal role from 2 guard and played the entire game at point guard still managing to play a very impressive style of basketball, showing a lot of heart, and scoring 9pts. Fabian Gonzalez fought tooth and nail contributing 7 pts. However, what I was most impressed with was the amount of rebounds, steals, and loose balls he was able to get his hands on. It really shows a great display of pride and passion when someone just goes out there and gives 110% night in and night out. Mike Small started his first game last night and came to play. Small attacked the basket well for a second game in a row putting in 7pts.

Coming into last night's game I think the most I have ever seen someone get on the floor for a loose ball in one game would probably be 4 or 5 times. Well that mark was CRUSHED by Dakota Black last night. This kid legit got on the ground 10+ times by the end of the night. If I could get the entire team to play with this kind of effort night in and night out, I strongly feel that our record would be 8-2 instead of 3-7.

1-17 - Comstock 47 - Plainwell 34

On January 17 the JV Boys Basketball team traveled to Plainwell. After a subpar first half from our JV Colts both teams went into the locker rooms tied at 18 a piece. As the 3rd quarter kicked off the boys started to get a fire lit under them. DeShawn McPherson scored 6 of his 7 pts in the first half of the 3rd to get things off to a good start. Trey Carter also managed to score 6 of his 10 pts in the 3rd hitting two big threes to keep the momentum going. The teams all around improved defense was just too much for Trojans, that paired up with Gavin Clopton dropping in 14 pts lead the Comstock JV Colts to a 47-34 win over Plainwell's JV Boys.

1-9 - Comstock 30 - Allegan 28

Last night your Comstock JV Colts went into Allegan to face the Tigers in what would turn out to be a close battle from horn to horn. Comstock took an early lead, due to the back court duo of Gavin Clopton (6) and Cal Ormanovich (8) scoring all but 2 of their combined 14 points by the midway point in the third quarter. Trey Carter was able to put up 8 of his 10 pts in the fourth quarter, but the more impressive aspect of his game was the fact that even though he struggled early offensively he was still able to force a lot of turnovers as well as jump on some loose balls to help the Colts effort defensively. His defensive efforts were only surpassed by that of Deshawn McPherson who played an incredible second half defensively altering many of the Tigers shot attempts as well as securing a block/steal at a key moment late in the game. As if that wasn't enough with a minute left on the clock which had our Colts up only 1, McPherson flew in out of no where to secure a tip put back which would end up being the winning basket for the Colts. Comstock would then go on to hold their lead and win the game 30-28.

12-28 - Comstock 61 - White Pigeon 12

Over the break the Boys JV Basketball Team was able to pick up its first win over White Pigeon 61-12. A tough press overwhelmed the Chiefs early and once the Colts took the lead they never looked back. It was a great effort by all with Cal Ormanovich leading his team with 17. Darrien Richards scored 13 and Gavin Clopton was able to put up 10 points as their team went on to a coast victory.

12-27 - Comstock 65 - Brandywine 68 OT

12-17 - Comstock 44 - Three Rivers 51

Last night, Tuesday December 17th the Comstock JV Boys Basketball Team hosted Three Rivers. After a slow starting first quarter (5-4) the Colts went into halftime with a 17-16 lead. They then started out the 3rd quarter with a 7-2 run taking a 24-18 lead midway through the third behind the all around hustle of Fabian Gonzalez (5pts) and Cal Omanovich (7pts). However, Three Rivers would go on a run of their own and take 35-29 lead going into the fourth quarter. In the fourth Clopton scored 6 of his 17pts trying to push the Colts on a final attempt to take the game... but the boys fell short 44-51.

12-12 - Comstock49 - Otsego 58

The Colts started off the game on a nice run starting the game up 12 to 6 after the 1st quarter, only to watch that lead fizzle to a 17-17 tie at the half. The third quarter saw both teams put up more points than they mustered in the first half with 18 remaining tied at 35 all. After a back and forth battle the fourth with just under three minutes remaining the score was tied at 43 all. However, the Colts were unable to take control of the game as they fell 49-58. Gavin Clopton put up 10 4th quarter points to end the game with 18. Cal Omanovich had a good game on both ends, forcing a few turnovers and starting off a few fast breaks, he ended the game with 6pts. Trey Carter also contributed 7 pts.

12-10 - Comstock 46 - Parchment 53

The Comstock JV Boys basketball team lost last night 46-53. The Colts fought hard and closed an early double digit deficit to within one on two different occasions but weren't able to secure the lead. Dakota Black came off the bench showing a lot of heart, hustle, and intensity, getting his hands on a lot of rebounds and lose balls. Cal Omanovich played a very solid four quarters top to bottom ending the contest with 13pts. Gavin Clopton also contributed 12 pts.
