10-11 - Comstock 8 - Lawton 1
Tonight we hosted Lawton at the HS. The Colts went right after the ball from
the kickoff, quickly gaining possession and driving to the goal. At 25 seconds
into the game Kyle Mortimer scored of first goal. We were able to maintain that
pace for the first 15min of the match with 2 goals by Owen Davis and another by
Kyle. At that point we started to move players around to try some different
positions. Lawton worked their way down the field and snuck one in just under
the arm of keeper Jeffrey Koss. We answered shortly after with Dalton Wilkins
finishing from a corner kick. We ended the half with another goal by Owen Davis
from a pass from Alex Patov leading 6-1. Second half we slowed our pace
focusing on ball control and more position moves to gives other some chances up
front. Midway through the half Owen Davis was able to connect from another
corner kick. We closed out the game with Dalton Wilkins scoring from a great
feed by Owen Davis. Andrew Pack stepped into goal second half but never saw the
ball!
10-4 - Comstock 2 - Battle Creek 0
Tonight we hosted Battle Creek at NEMS. Both teams started slowly with the
first half ending scoreless. Second half we settled down and started passing
the ball to each other more and our time of possession increased. The Colts
first goal came in the second half when Kyle Mortimer was able to finish a
crossing pass from Fernando Torres Morales. A few minutes later Owen Davis
drove to the goal after being fed by Dalton Wilkins. Our midfield and defense
played well, lots of effort hustling back to defend the BC drives. This
combined with some good saves by Alex Kish in goal kept BC scoreless.
9-30 - Comstock 3 - Mattawan Gold 4
Friday night we played at Mattawan against what we expected to be a tough
opponent. Weather was poor with rain showers on and off. We started slow and
Mattawan took advantage scoring a couple goals in the opening 5 minutes. By
Halftime Mattawan was up 4-0 but later in the half we had started to hold our
own with them starting to increase our time of possession. We shuffled the
field positions and made a keeper change for the second half. Once we started
to possess the ball more the game got a bit more physical with Mattawan
committing several fouls trying to win the ball back. Owen Davis led off our
comeback attempt with a goal early in the second half, Alex Patov scored a
second goal a few minutes later. Our last goal came on a direct free kick when
Owen Davis put the kick into the top of the net. We held then scoreless second
half but still came up short.
9-20 - Comstock 6 - Plainwell Black 1
Tonight we had our first home game hosting Plainwell Black at NEMS. Based on
our performance to date we decided to try a different field formation. We
started the season heavy on defense with 4 defenders, 3 mids and 3 forwards.
Tonight we pushed out bigger guys who had been center Defense up to Center mid
in a 3-4-3 formation. This changed combined with a smaller, slightly less
skilled opponent proved to give us much more offensive possession. At halftime
we were up 2-1 with goals by Owen Davis and Jonathon Torres-Morales. Giving up
one goal to a well executed corner kick by Plainwell. 2nd half we were able to
capitalize on a lack of subs for Plainwell and out run them with a couple
breakaway goals by Owen Davis and Kyle Mortimer. Owen closed out a hat trick on
a PK for a hand ball in the box. In his second game with the team Zach Liby was
positioned perfect to capitalize on a second chance for his first goal of the
season. Overall a great effort by the whole team with increased hustle to try
to win more 50/50 balls and continued growth with ball movement.
9-16 - Comstock 1 - Kalamazoo Christian 3
Friday we had our third match of the season at Kalamazoo Christian. We welcomed
two new players to the team for this game: Jayro Plascnecia and Zach Liby. The
boys held there own through most of the game but struggled at being first to the
ball and maintaining possession. RJ Baker scored his first goal of the season
from a pass from Alex Patov but the team came up short, losing 1-3. Final
Score: Kalamazoo Christian 3, Comstock Colts 1.
9-13 - Comstock 4 - Parchment 1
It was apparent the boys had learned a lot in game #1 as they were doing better
maintaining field positions and passing the ball. In the first half we went up
3-0 with a goal from Fernando Torres-Morales and 2 goals by Owen Davis. A 4th
scoring opportunity was missed when Alex Kish went wide on a penalty kick. 2-3
more shots rang off the goal posts. Haydn Haskins played strong in goal first
half, not allowing Parchment to score. Second half we maintained the level of
play and added to our score with a goal by Alex Patov to finish the game winning
4-1. Owen Davis stepped into goal second half and made several great saves
including saving one penalty kick. Jonathon Torres Morales recorded 2 assists.
Other notables - Dalton Wilkins, Kyle Mortimer, Jeffery Koss and RJ Baker all
made excellent plays at defense.
9-12 - Comstock 1 - Hackett 4
Tonight we started our season against the Kalamazoo Irish. Being our first full field contest there was much to get comfortable with in the first half. The Irish took advantage keeping the ball on our end most of the first half going up 2-0 by halftime. We started to come together second half with some excellent saves by Haydn Haskins. Our first goal of the season was scored by Alex Patov. Second half we played pretty evenly getting several other scoring opportunities but we unable to capitalize. Final Score Kalmazoo Irish 4, Comstock Colts 1.
