Emotional Support Resources

It’s been a week since our school district experienced the threat of gun violence, and many of us are still coming to terms with the ramifications of this event. Regretfully, these types of incidents have become all too familiar in our nation’s schools and communities.

Fortunately, no one was physically harmed in this incident. Regardless, our community is in the process of coping with the emotional and psychological impact of this senseless violence. It serves as a good time to pause and reflect, process what happened, and consider actions which we all can take going forward to deal with the echoes of this traumatic event.

Our Colt staff care deeply about the wellbeing of each and every student. If your child, or someone else in our school community, is struggling to deal with the emotions caused by last Tuesday’s shooting, please know that our staff is listening and wanting to help.

According to the National Association of School Psychologists, families, school staff, and members of the community can play an important role in reestablishing a sense of normalcy and security for children after an act of violence occurs. Here are some key ideas to keep in mind:

  •  Reaffirm safety - Emphasize that schools are a safe place.
  •  Make time to talk - Let children’s questions guide the information you provide.
  •  Keep explanations developmentally appropriate.
  •  Review safety procedures - Help children identify one adult at school that they can contact if they feel threatened.
  •  Observe children’s emotional state - Children will differ in how they react to stress.
  •  Maintain a normal routine - Keep a regular schedule to assure and promote physical and mental health.

Below, you will find a few documents from national organizations that we hope will be helpful in taking care of each other.
